Disembark: Ushuaia, Argentina

Destinations: The Falkland Islands (West Point and Saunders Islands, Stanley), South Georgia (Fortuna Bay, Salisbury Plain, St Andrews Bay, Gold Harbour, Grytviken), the South Orkney Islands, Elephant Island and Point Wild, the Antarctic Sound and Brown Bluff, the South Shetland Islands, and the Antarctic Peninsula across the Antarctic Circle (Crystal Sound, Detaille, Pourquoi Pas and Horseshoe Islands)

Ship: Hondius

Duration: 23 days

Day-by-day itinerary

Days 1 - 2 Ushuaia and the South Atlantic

Embark at Ushuaia and sail the Beagle Channel, then turn northeast for the Falklands with a full day at sea among the westerlies and their escort of albatross and petrels.

Days 3 - 4 Falkland Islands

Two days among the islands, with approachable rockhopper, Magellanic and gentoo penguins and black browed albatross at West Point and Saunders, and a call at the small British capital of Stanley.

Days 5 - 10 The Southern Ocean and South Georgia

Crossing the Antarctic Convergence, the ship reaches South Georgia for four days among its greatest sites: the king penguin cities of Salisbury Plain, St Andrews Bay and Gold Harbour, the elephant seal beaches, Fortuna Bay and Shackleton's grave at Grytviken.

Days 11 - 13 South Orkneys and Elephant Island

Turning south through ice flecked seas, the ship visits the seldom seen South Orkney Islands, then Elephant Island, where a Zodiac cruise off Point Wild recalls the survival of Shackleton's men in 1916.

Days 14 - 20 The Weddell Sea, the Peninsula and the Polar Circle

The heart of the voyage moves through the Antarctic Sound and Brown Bluff, the volcanic South Shetlands and the sheltered bays of the Gerlache Strait, then pushes on across the Antarctic Circle into Crystal Sound and the remote coast beyond, from Detaille Island to Horseshoe and Pourquoi Pas Islands.

Days 21 - 22 The Drake Passage

The homeward crossing returns the ship to the great seabirds, with the expedition team's closing talks.

Day 23 Ushuaia

Disembark in Ushuaia after breakfast. Across so long a route, ice, weather and wildlife have the final word, and the expedition leader sets the plan each day under IAATO rules.

Activities

    Zodiac Cruising

Aboard a sturdy inflatable, you sit just above the waterline as your guide noses among brash ice and towering bergs. It is the closest encounter with the polar world, seals hauled out nearby, a whale surfacing, the deep quiet broken only by cracking ice.

    Hiking

Explore remote landscapes on foot, with guided hikes available for all ability levels—from relaxed walks to more challenging routes for experienced hikers.

    Polar Diving

Descend beneath the ice into a hushed world of sea squirts, squat lobsters, dogfish, sea butterflies, and shrubby horsetails. Just a few of the residents you may encounter. Reserved for experienced dry-suit divers and led by specialist guides, it reveals the rarely seen life that thrives in these frigid, clear waters.
