Duration: 10 days, 9 nights.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1 Akureyri

The voyage begins at Akureyri on Iceland's north coast, reached from Reykjavik by an optional chartered coach that must be booked in advance. The ship sails in the early evening, heading north towards the Denmark Strait.

Day 2 Towards East Greenland

Crossing the Denmark Strait and the Arctic Circle, fulmars, kittiwakes, gannets and guillemots follow the ship and whales are possible. By evening the first icebergs and snow capped peaks appear near Kap Brewster, at the mouth of Scoresby Sund.

Days 3 - 4 Into Scoresby Sund

Grounded icebergs, some more than 100 metres high, mark the entrance to the largest fjord system on Earth. A landing is planned at Tyskit Nunat, where members of Alfred Wegener's research party wintered in 1930 and 1931, then at Saakattaakajik, among the remains of Thule summer houses built with whale vertebrae, with a possible 12 kilometre walk towards Sydkap. The ship then threads the narrow Ofjord, beneath peaks of more than 2,000 metres including Grundtvigskirken, to the Hoffman Peninsula, where muskoxen are often seen. Long hikers cross the tundra from Harefjord to Rypefjord, while shorter excursions explore both sides of the peninsula.

Day 5 Vikingebugt and Helgenaes

On the Volquart Boons Kyst, a Zodiac cruise in Vikingebugt approaches the glacier front, where polar bears are sometimes seen on the ice. A walk across the basalt columns at Helgenaes looks back over Ofjord to the distant shores of Jameson Land, before an evening sail past more of the coast's glacier fronts.

Day 6 Hurry Inlet and Ittoqqortoormiit

A morning landing at Hurry Inlet in Liverpool Land, near a hunter's cabin built in 1930, looks across to the fossil cliffs of Neils Klinter, with Hareelv and its muskoxen as an alternative. In the afternoon the ship calls at Ittoqqortoormiit, the largest settlement in Scoresby Sund with around 500 residents, its sled dogs, post office and small church, before sailing south past Kap Brewster and the Blosseville Coast.

Day 7 Steward Island

Steward Island, a hunting ground for the people of Scoresby Sund, holds well preserved remains of Thule dwellings, and the hill behind them looks out over the nearby glaciers. Polar bears, narwhals and several species of seal are all possible here.

Day 8 Turner Sound and Romer Fjord

The narrow, fast flowing Turner Sound, where walruses are occasionally seen, and Romer Fjord, with warm springs on its southern shore, both allow the ship to sail far inland, with another chance of narwhals along this rugged coast.

Day 9 The Denmark Strait

A day at sea for whales and seabirds, possibly passing the islet of Kolbeinsey and the island of Grimsey on the way back to Iceland, and after dark the northern lights may appear.

Day 10 Akureyri

The voyage ends in Akureyri, with an optional chartered coach back to Reykjavik, a drive of around six hours that must be booked in advance. Ice and weather set the programme throughout, and the expedition leader makes the final call each day.

Activities

    Zodiac Cruising

Aboard a sturdy inflatable, you sit just above the waterline as your guide noses among brash ice and towering bergs. It is the closest encounter with the polar world, seals hauled out nearby, a whale surfacing, the deep quiet broken only by cracking ice.

    Hiking

Explore remote landscapes on foot, with guided hikes available for all ability levels—from relaxed walks to more challenging routes for experienced hikers.
