Route Information

Embark: Ushuaia, Argentina

Disembark: Ushuaia, Argentina

Destinations: The South Shetland Islands (Livingston and Deception Islands), the Antarctic Peninsula (Cuverville Island, Neko Harbour, Paradise Bay), the Lemaire Channel, Pleneau and Petermann Islands, Crystal Sound and the Antarctic Circle at 66 degrees south (Detaille Island, the Fish Islands), the Melchior Islands.

Ships: Ortelius, Plancius

Duration: 13 days

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1 Ushuaia

Embark in the afternoon at Ushuaia and sail down the Beagle Channel as the expedition begins.

Days 2 - 3 The Drake Passage

Two days crossing the Drake, with wandering albatross and the first polar seabirds, the ship passing the Antarctic Convergence into colder water.

Days 4 - 10 The Peninsula and the push south

Seven days of exploration, first among the wildlife and history of the South Shetlands and the sheltered bays of the Gerlache Strait, then south through the Lemaire Channel and across the Antarctic Circle into Crystal Sound. Here the ice thickens and the wildlife thins, and landings such as the abandoned base on Detaille Island and the Adelie colonies of the Fish Islands feel genuinely remote. March departures are especially rewarding for wildlife: late season krill draws feeding humpback and minke whales into the Peninsula channels, and as the long nights return the aurora australis may appear over the ice.

Days 11 - 12 The Drake Passage

The northward crossing rounds off the voyage with seabirds at the rail and the expedition team’s final talks.

Day 13 Ushuaia

Disembark in Ushuaia after breakfast. Reaching the Circle and the deep south is an aim rather than a promise: ice, weather and the expedition leader have the final word.

Activities

    Zodiac Cruising

Aboard a sturdy inflatable, you sit just above the waterline as your guide noses among brash ice and towering bergs. It is the closest encounter with the polar world, seals hauled out nearby, a whale surfacing, the deep quiet broken only by cracking ice.

    Hiking

Explore remote landscapes on foot, with guided hikes available for all ability levels—from relaxed walks to more challenging routes for experienced hikers.

    Polar Diving

Descend beneath the ice into a hushed world of sea squirts, squat lobsters, dogfish, sea butterflies, and shrubby horsetails. Just a few of the residents you may encounter. Reserved for experienced dry-suit divers and led by specialist guides, it reveals the rarely seen life that thrives in these frigid, clear waters.
