Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1 Arrive Santiago or Buenos Aires

Arrive in your gateway city, Santiago or Buenos Aires depending on the departure, and transfer to your hotel. Rest after the long flight, or step out to take in the city, then gather in the evening to meet your fellow travellers and the expedition team.

Day 2 Fly to Ushuaia, embark

Fly south to Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, set between the peaks of Tierra del Fuego and the Beagle Channel. Board your ship and sail out along the channel as the mountains close in, with the long voyage ahead laid out over dinner and a welcome briefing.

Days 3 - 5 Chilean fjords and Alberto de Agostini National Park

Three days in a labyrinth of forested channels and glacier-hung fjords. In Pia Fjord you stand close to a glacier front that calves into the sea, and along Glacier Alley a succession of ice rivers spills from the Darwin range into Garibaldi and Agostini fjords. Zodiac cruises and shore walks in Alberto de Agostini National Park bring you among southern beech forest, waterfalls and cascading ice, with the birds of the Cape Horn Biosphere Reserve overhead.

Days 6 - 7 Ainsworth Bay, Karukinka and at sea

Explore the wild heart of Tierra del Fuego at Ainsworth Bay, where a glacier meets a bay backed by peat bog and forest, and Karukinka Natural Park protects one of the last great tracts of sub-Antarctic wilderness. Look for elephant seals ashore and the birdlife of the fjords, before the ship rounds Cape Horn and turns east across open water for the Falklands.

Days 8 - 9 Falkland Islands

Two days among these remote British islands, a place of open moorland, white sand beaches and a wildlife cast quite its own. On the outer western islands you may walk up to colonies of black-browed albatross and rockhopper penguins nesting cheek by jowl, with gentoo and Magellanic penguins and fur seals nearby. A call at Stanley, the tiny capital, brings a different flavour again, its Victorian cottages, red telephone boxes and windswept gardens a small pocket of Britain in the South Atlantic.

Days 10 - 11 At sea, toward South Georgia

Two days sailing east toward South Georgia. This is time to immerse yourself in the story ahead, as historians retrace Shackleton's escape from the ice and his open-boat crossing to these very shores, and naturalists prepare you for one of the world's great wildlife spectacles. Seabirds follow the ship the whole way.

Days 12 - 15 South Georgia

Four days to explore the mountainous crown of the Southern Ocean. Glaciers spill from jagged peaks to the sea, and the beaches heave with life. King penguins gather in their tens of thousands, their chicks in downy brown huddles, while elephant seals and fur seals crowd the tideline. At Grytviken you can stand at Shackleton's grave beside the old whaling station, and at Stromness Harbour trace the final steps of his overland trek to rescue. Days are shaped by the weather, with landings, hikes and Zodiac cruises chosen to make the most of each.

Days 16 - 17 At sea, toward Antarctica

Turning south for the continent, the ship crosses toward the Antarctic Peninsula, often by way of the South Orkney Islands where sea and weather allow. The first tabular icebergs appear, the air sharpens, and talks on deck turn to the ice ahead. Keep watch for whales along the ship's track.

Days 18 - 22 Antarctica

Five days among the ice of the Antarctic Peninsula, with the schedule kept flexible so the ship can follow the wildlife and the weather. With long hours of daylight, one outing might be a Zodiac cruise past seals on the floes, another a kayak beneath towering bergs, another a walk ashore among gentoo and Adelie penguins. Humpback and minke whales are a frequent sight, and the expedition team brings the continent to life through talks and quiet moments at the rail. After the long approach, these are the days that crown the voyage.

Days 23 - 24 At sea, crossing the Drake Passage

Two days on the fabled crossing back to South America. At times boisterous, at times glassy calm, the Drake is a wildlife theatre of its own, with albatross wheeling behind the ship and a chance of orca and dolphins. Reflect on the journey from the observation lounge, join a final talk, and raise a glass at a farewell dinner.

Day 25 Ushuaia, disembark and fly to Santiago or Buenos Aires

Sail into Ushuaia at the end of the world, disembark after breakfast and transfer to the airport for your flight to Santiago or Buenos Aires and onward journey home.
