Route Information

Embark: Bergen, Norway

Ship: National Geographic Endurance

Duration: 16 days

Additional Information: One hotel night in Bergen before the voyage and one in Oslo after are included. The recommended group flight from Longyearbyen to Oslo is not included in the pricing.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1 Arrive Bergen, Norway

Arrive in Bergen and transfer to your hotel. The old Hanseatic port, with its wooden wharf houses and fish market beneath the surrounding hills, is a fine place to begin. Gather in the evening for dinner and a briefing on the voyage ahead.

Day 2 Nordfjord

Embark and sail into Nordfjord, one of the longest and deepest of the western fjords, its steep sides rising to snowfields and glacier tongues. Go ashore or explore by Zodiac beneath the peaks, with the option of a visit inland toward the ice.

Days 3 - 5 The central Norwegian coast

Three days working north along the fjord coast, threading islands and narrow sounds between the open sea and the mountains. The ship calls where the weather allows, for shore walks and Zodiac cruises among waterfalls, fishing villages and steep green flanks still streaked with the last of winter's snow.

Day 6 Lofoten Islands and Trollfjorden

Reach the Lofoten Islands, a wall of jagged peaks rising straight from the sea, and nose into the narrow cleft of Trollfjorden, where the cliffs close in on either side. Ashore, red-painted fishing cabins cluster beneath the mountains in one of the most striking corners of the Norwegian coast.

Day 7 Tysfjorden

Explore Tysfjorden, a deep fjord reaching in toward the Swedish border beneath high granite walls. It is a quiet, grand landscape of glassy water and steep rock, with time to explore by Zodiac and kayak.

Day 8 Tromso

Call at Tromso, the lively capital of the Norwegian Arctic, set on its island beneath snowy peaks. There is time to explore the town, with optional visits ashore, before the ship turns for the open sea and the north.

Day 9 Bear Island (Bjornoya)

Far out in the Barents Sea, midway to Svalbard, lies Bear Island, a remote nature reserve of towering sea cliffs. Sea and weather permitting, Zodiacs take you beneath cliffs alive with kittiwakes, guillemots and fulmars, one of the great seabird stations of the north.

Days 10 - 14 Exploring Svalbard

Five days to explore the archipelago at the pace the ice allows, still deep in its spring snow. The route stays flexible so the ship can follow the wildlife, edging into the pack ice in search of polar bears, drifting past walrus on the floes, and nosing into fjords beneath frozen glacier fronts. Ashore you may walk among reindeer and early nesting seabirds, with Zodiac cruises and kayaking bringing you close to the ice, and the light lengthening a little more each day. Specific landings depend on conditions.

Day 15 Longyearbyen, disembark and fly to Oslo

Disembark at Longyearbyen this morning and board your flight south to Oslo for a final night's hotel.

Day 16 Depart Oslo

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your onward flight home.
