Route Information

Embark: Ushuaia, Argentina

Disembark: Ushuaia, Argentina

Destinations: The Antarctic Peninsula, South Georgia and the Falkland Islands

Ships: National Geographic Endurance, National Geographic Explorer and National Geographic Resolution

Duration: 21 or 22 days

Additional Information: One hotel night before the voyage in Buenos Aires or Santiago, depending on your ship. Recommended group flights between Buenos Aires or Santiago and Ushuaia are available to purchase.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1 Arrive Buenos Aires or Santiago

Arrive in Buenos Aires or Santiago, depending on your ship, and transfer to your hotel, with time to take in the city. Gather in the evening to meet the expedition team and your fellow travellers.

Day 2 Fly to Ushuaia, embark

Fly south to Ushuaia, with a morning in Tierra del Fuego National Park and a catamaran lunch on the Beagle Channel before boarding your ship and sailing out into the channel.

Day 3 At sea, toward the Falklands

A day at sea as the ship crosses to the Falklands. Wandering and black-browed albatross trace long arcs behind the stern, and the expedition team opens the voyage with talks on the islands and the wildlife to come.

Days 4 - 5 Falkland Islands

Two days among these remote islands, a place of open moorland, white sand beaches and a wildlife cast quite its own. On the outer western islands you may walk up to colonies of black-browed albatross and rockhopper penguins, with gentoo and Magellanic penguins and fur seals nearby, while a call at Stanley brings the islands' small, distinctly British capital.

Days 6 - 7 At sea, toward South Georgia

Two days sailing east toward South Georgia, time to immerse yourself in the story ahead as historians retrace Shackleton's escape from the ice and naturalists prepare you for one of the world's great wildlife spectacles. Seabirds follow the ship the whole way.

Days 8 - 12 South Georgia

Five days to explore South Georgia, its glaciers spilling to the sea and its beaches heaving with life. King penguins gather in their tens of thousands, with elephant and fur seals along the tideline. Landings, hikes and Zodiac cruises are shaped by the weather, with visits to historic sites including Grytviken and Stromness Harbour.

Days 13 - 14 At sea, toward Antarctica

Turning south for the continent, the ship crosses toward the Antarctic Peninsula, often by way of the South Orkney Islands where sea and weather allow. The first tabular icebergs appear and talks on deck turn to the ice ahead. Keep watch for whales along the ship's track.

Days 15 - 18 Antarctica

Four days among the ice of the Antarctic Peninsula, the schedule flexible so the ship can follow the wildlife and the weather. A Zodiac cruise past seals on the floes, a kayak beneath towering bergs, a walk ashore among gentoo and Adelie penguins, with humpback and minke whales a frequent sight. This is Antarctica at close quarters, and the reason for the long journey south.

Days 19 - 20 At sea, crossing the Drake Passage

Two days on the crossing back to South America, the Drake a wildlife theatre of its own with albatross wheeling behind the ship and a chance of orca and dolphins. Join a final talk and raise a glass at a farewell dinner.

Day 21 Ushuaia, disembark and fly to Buenos Aires or Santiago

Sail into Ushuaia, disembark after breakfast and transfer to the airport for your flight to Buenos Aires or Santiago and onward journey home.

Day 1 Arrive Buenos Aires or Santiago

Arrive in Buenos Aires, the cosmopolitan capital of Argentina, or in Santiago, Chile's mountain-ringed capital, depending on your ship, and transfer to your hotel. There is time to take in the city before the adventure ahead. Gather in the evening to meet the expedition team and your fellow travellers.

Day 2 Fly to Ushuaia, embark

Join the recommended group flight south to Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, set between the jagged peaks of the Darwin Range and the sheltered waters of the Beagle Channel. Visit Tierra del Fuego National Park, then settle in for lunch aboard a private catamaran cruising the Beagle Channel, watching for South American sea lions and imperial cormorants. By evening you are aboard your ship and easing out into the channel.

Days 3 - 4 At sea, crossing the Drake Passage

Two days on the fabled 500-mile crossing toward the Antarctic Peninsula. Sometimes boisterous, sometimes glassy calm, the Drake is a wildlife theatre in its own right, with wandering albatross tracing long arcs behind the ship and a chance of orca and dolphins. Settle into shipboard life, visit the bridge, and join the expedition team's opening talks on the ice and wildlife ahead.

Days 5 - 8 Antarctica

Four days among the ice of the Antarctic Peninsula, where the long hours of daylight and a flexible schedule let the ship follow the wildlife and the weather. One outing might be a kayak beneath towering icebergs, another a Zodiac cruise in search of seals and blue-eyed shags, another a walk ashore among thousands of gentoo and Adelie penguins, or the quiet thrill of the ship crunching through pack ice. Everywhere lie opportunities for photography, with your expedition team on hand to enrich each encounter.

Days 9 - 10 At sea, toward South Georgia

Setting out from the South Shetland Islands, the ship follows the wake of Shackleton's open-boat voyage across some 800 miles of the Scotia Sea. These waters hold a growing population of whales, among them fin, southern right and even blue whales, while albatross and petrels wing past the ship. Days at sea are part of the journey, not merely a transit, a chance to catch your breath, review your photographs and let the expedition team prepare you for the spectacle of South Georgia.

Days 11 - 15 South Georgia

Five days to explore the mountainous crown of the Southern Ocean, and the heart of the voyage. Glaciers spill from jagged peaks to the sea, and the beaches heave with life. King penguins gather in their tens of thousands, their chicks in downy brown huddles, while elephant seals and fur seals crowd the tideline. The flexible schedule brings walks, hikes, kayaking and Zodiac cruises, with landings at historic sites including Grytviken, the final resting place of Shackleton, and Stromness Harbour, where his overland trek to rescue finally ended. Sometimes called the Serengeti of the Southern Ocean, South Georgia defies comparison.

Days 16 - 17 At sea, toward the Falklands

Two days sailing west toward the Falklands, time to think back over South Georgia and to look ahead. Compare images with the National Geographic photographer, join the naturalists on the bridge to watch for rare dolphins and yet another species of albatross, and add new sightings to the day's record. The waters near the Falklands are rich with marine life.

Days 18 - 20 Falkland Islands

All the best of expedition travel comes together in the western Falklands. Land on a beach tucked into a rocky cove, walk out across rolling green pasture and find yourself at the crest of a sea cliff above the South Atlantic surf, at the edge of a breeding colony of black-browed albatross so close you can hear the wind on their wings. Thousands of gentoo, rockhopper and Magellanic penguins gather here alongside fur seals. At Stanley, the bright little capital, Victorian cottages and windswept gardens make a charming pocket of Britain, with a chance to visit a small farm for sheep shearing and peat cutting, or to walk the hills and beaches beyond town.

Day 21 At sea, toward Ushuaia

A final day at sea across the shallow waters of the Falklands Shelf, back toward Ushuaia. Join the expedition staff for talks that draw together all you have seen, and spend time on deck with the seabirds and dolphins of these seas. It is a day for reflection, the far south already settling into memory.

Day 22 Ushuaia, disembark and fly to Buenos Aires or Santiago

Sail into Ushuaia at the end of the world, disembark after breakfast and transfer to the airport for the recommended flight to Buenos Aires or Santiago and your onward journey home.

Dates & rates

Fares are dynamic and change with demand and availability. Popular departures fill quickly, so booking early secures the best cabin choice, fares and priority access.

Note: Pricing does not include the recommended group flights between Buenos Aires or Santiago and Ushuaia. Guests can purchase these at an additional cost or arrange their own internal flights privately.

The joining point for the National Geographic Endurance is Buenos Aires and for the National Geographic Resolution it is Santiago.
