Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1 Arrive Santiago or Buenos Aires
Arrive in your gateway city, Santiago or Buenos Aires depending on the departure, and transfer to your hotel. Rest after the long flight, or head out to take in the city, then gather to meet your fellow travellers and the expedition team.
Day 2 Fly to Ushuaia, embark
Fly south to Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, set between the peaks of Tierra del Fuego and the Beagle Channel. Spend time in Tierra del Fuego National Park, where southern beech forest crowds the shoreline, then join a private catamaran on the Beagle Channel for lunch, watching for sea lions and imperial cormorants. By evening you are aboard and pointed south.
Days 3 - 4 At sea, crossing the Drake Passage
The fabled crossing to the continent, some 500 miles of open water where wandering albatross wheel behind the ship and the first icebergs mark the approach to Antarctica. Settle into shipboard life, join talks on the natural history ahead, and watch from the bridge as the ice draws near.
Days 5 - 10 Antarctic Peninsula
Six days among the ice, with the schedule kept flexible so the ship can follow the wildlife and the weather. With long hours of daylight, one outing might be a Zodiac cruise past seals on the floes, another a kayak beneath towering bergs, another a walk ashore among gentoo and Adelie penguins with blue eyed shags nesting on the cliffs above. Humpback and minke whales are a frequent sight along the ship's track, and the expedition team brings the continent to life through talks on deck and quiet moments at the rail. These are the days at the heart of the voyage.
Day 11 At sea, rounding Cape Horn
Turn north for South America and sail past Cape Horn, the storied headland where the Atlantic and Pacific meet and generations of sailors tested themselves against the Southern Ocean. Seabirds crowd the ship's wake as the coast of Tierra del Fuego rises ahead.
Days 12 - 13 Chilean fjords and Alberto de Agostini National Park
Enter a labyrinth of forested channels and glacier-hung fjords. In Pia Fjord you stand close to a glacier front that calves into the sea, and along Glacier Alley a succession of ice rivers spills from the Darwin range. Zodiac cruises and shore walks in Alberto de Agostini National Park bring you among southern beech forest, waterfalls and the birds of the Cape Horn Biosphere Reserve.
Day 14 Karukinka Natural Park and Ainsworth Bay
Explore the wild heart of Tierra del Fuego at Ainsworth Bay, where a glacier meets a bay backed by peat bog and forest, and Karukinka Natural Park protects one of the last great tracts of sub-Antarctic wilderness. Look for elephant seals hauled out ashore and for the tracks of the animals that move through the forest.
Day 15 Francisco Coloane Marine Park and the Strait of Magellan
Cruise the Strait of Magellan to Francisco Coloane Marine Park, Chile's first marine protected area and a summer feeding ground for humpback whales. Zodiacs take you among the whales, seals and seabirds, with Magellanic penguins on the nearby islets.
Day 16 Kirke Narrows and the Patagonian fjords
Thread the tight channel of the Kirke Narrows and continue through the fjords toward Puerto Natales, the mountains of Patagonia closing in on either side. It is a day of quiet passage and grand scenery from the deck.
Day 17 Puerto Natales and Torres del Paine National Park
The ship docks at Puerto Natales, gateway to Torres del Paine. Spend the day in the national park beneath its famous granite towers, watching for guanaco and condor and taking in lakes and glaciers among the most striking landscapes in South America.
Day 18 Disembark Puerto Natales, fly to Santiago
After breakfast, disembark and transfer for your flight to Santiago or Buenos Aires and onward journey home.
Day 1 Arrive Santiago or Buenos Aires
Arrive in your gateway city and transfer to your hotel, with time to rest or explore before the voyage ahead.
Day 2 Fly to Puerto Natales, embark
Fly south to Puerto Natales in Chilean Patagonia and spend time in Torres del Paine National Park beneath its granite towers before boarding your ship.
Days 3 - 4 Patagonian fjords and Kirke Narrows
Sail south through the fjords, threading the Kirke Narrows with the mountains of Patagonia on either hand, and cruising the Strait of Magellan toward the marine parks of Tierra del Fuego.
Day 5 Francisco Coloane Marine Park and Karukinka
Explore Francisco Coloane Marine Park and the wild coast of Tierra del Fuego, watching for humpback whales, seals and seabirds, with a landing in the Ainsworth Bay and Karukinka area.
Days 6 - 7 Alberto de Agostini National Park and the glacier fjords
Cruise Pia and Garibaldi fjords and Glacier Alley, standing close to calving glacier fronts and walking ashore among southern beech forest in the Cape Horn Biosphere Reserve.
Day 8 Rounding Cape Horn, at sea
Round Cape Horn and turn south for the continent, seabirds crowding the ship's wake as you leave South America behind.
Days 9 - 10 At sea, crossing the Drake Passage
The crossing to Antarctica, with albatross behind the ship and the first icebergs marking the approach to the Peninsula.
Days 11 - 16 Antarctic Peninsula
Six days among the ice, with Zodiac cruising, kayaking and walks ashore among penguin colonies, and whales along the ship's track. The flexible schedule lets the expedition team follow the best of the ice, the weather and the wildlife.
Day 17 At sea, toward Ushuaia
Recross to South America and sail toward Ushuaia, with a farewell gathering to close the voyage.
Day 18 Disembark Ushuaia, fly onward
Disembark at Ushuaia and transfer for your flight to Santiago or Buenos Aires.
